Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Pharos cost? Is there a free plan, or are there any special rates?

Pharos starts as low as $21 a month or $240 a year. Pricing is now oriented around Projects, as opposed to the numbers of users. You can now have as many colleagues as you need to have access to Pharos through your subscription. This includes colleagues that do not work at your firm, but are working on your Projects. An example would be inviting a consultant to join a Project in Pharos, because you want to make sure s/he is in the loop and able to collaborate fully.

Sorry, there is no free plan for Pharos. Pharos is a project of the Healthy Building Network ( -- a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to transform the market for building materials to advance the best environmental, health and social outcomes. HBN’s funding is derived largely from foundation grants. However, approximately 25% of our budget comes from subscriptions to Pharos and fees from other services we provide. Those funds are critical to keeping the doors open at HBN – and the Pharos Project up and running.

There is a 14-day free trial, during which you can try out the new Pharos at no charge.

We do have special pricing for schools, non-profits, and government agencies. If you are one of these, contact us.

What happens after my 14-day free trial ends?

At the end of your 14-day free trial, you will be prompted to select and pay for a subscription plan. If you are unsure which plan works best for you, we are happy to help you figure that out. If you need more time to test out Pharos, we can give you another day or two – just let us know.

How can I pay for Pharos?

You can use any major credit card to pay for your Pharos subscription. We also accept checks, if that’s easier for you.

What happens if I already have a subscription? Can I just keep using it? Will my payment change?

If you already have an annual Pharos subscription, of course, you can keep using it. Your payment amount won’t change until your subscription comes up for renewal. As we make the transition from user-based subscriptions to project-based ones, we will be moving your firm to the plan that seems best aligned with your current subscription. You can contact us to change your subscription plan at any time.

My current subscription is limited by the number of users – and now subscriptions are based on projects? What does that mean for me and the other Pharos users at my firm?

That’s right. New subscriptions are oriented around Projects, instead of numbers of users. This means that anyone in your firm who is working on a Project that you want to use Pharos for can be invited into the system. You can also invite colleagues from outside your firm to a Project in Pharos, under your subscription. This will permit you to keep everyone on the Project up-to-date on things like materials selection health criteria and decisions.

What is a Project? How many can I have?

An individual or collaborative enterprise that is carefully planned and designed to achieve a particular aim. “A research project.”

Pharos is most commonly used by groups of people who are working together to research and understand the health hazards associated with the chemical contents of building materials. The Pharos user-base is comprised primarily architects, designers, building owners and specifiers who are gathering this data to inform the design and construction or renovation of a building. This effort is what we mean by Project in Pharos.

You can organize your Projects in Pharos however works best for you. In most cases, your projects are going to be obvious to you:

Maternity Wing Renovation, Memorial Hospital, Kansas City, MO
600 W 58th Street, NYC

There may be a situation where one of your projects is so large, and involves so many individuals, that it makes more sense to have a separate subscription to Pharos for that particular effort. In this situation, your Projects in Pharos could be different elements of the overall Project that are handled by different groups: Core & Shell, Interiors, Conveyances, etc. Whatever groupings allow your Projects to function smoothly.

One important thing to know is that subscription plans are keyed to the number of Projects that are active (and the data can still be modified). Completed Projects can be archived, to use as reference, but no longer changed.

Regardless of the subscription plan that you ultimately select, anyone in your firm invited to the subscription will have access to the three main Pharos libraries for Building Materials, Chemicals and Materials, and Certifications and Standards.

If I already use Pharos, will all of my data (product lists, etc.) still be accessible?

Yes, everything will be there!
