Greenbuild 2006 opens tonight! In addition to participating again this year as a non-profit exhibitor @ booth #18, Healthy Building Network (HBN) will: 1) hold booth-side press briefings to announce two new cutting-edge projects; 2) convene a panel with three of the world’s most influential green chemists; and, 3) hold a press conference with four leading manufacturers who have embraced green chemistry.
1. HBN to introduce two new projects at booth-side press briefings at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday at booth # 18. On hand to speak on these projects will be Jason McLennan, Executive Director of Cascadia Region Green Building Council; Bruce Hampton, AIA, partner of Elton + Hampton Architects and member of the Hickory Consortium; Jack Geibig of University of Tennessee's Center for Clean Products and Clean Technologies; Bill Walsh, Founder and Executive Director of the Healthy Building Network; and, Tom Lent, HBN’s Policy Director.
A. Pharos Project: Signaling the Future of Materials Selection. The Pharos Project seeks to define a consumer-driven vision of truly green building materials and how they should be evaluated in harmony with principles of environmental health and justice. Pharos’ foundation will be building a community to develop this vision, comprised of those who use building materials working with those who study their impacts on health and the environment. The principles of the Pharos Project are transparency, comprehensiveness, independence, accuracy and fairness applied to analyzing the impact building materials have on human health, the environment and communities – during production, use, and at the end of their useful life. B. Unity Homes Project: Helping rebuild the Gulf of Mexico by providing affordable, energy efficient factory-built homes using healthier building materials. Unity Homes is a multi-dimensional initiative harmonizing the best economies and standards of green building with programs by affordable housing and relief organizations to eradicate poverty through homeownership. We will provide factory built homes for the affordable housing market that cost the same or less than conventional models, but which are energy efficient and use healthier building materials. Our project starts in coastal Mississippi. It is a strategic investment in communities where the twin crises of endemic poverty and natural disaster struck hard. These neighborhoods have long been visited by disastrous economic conditions, which were only amplified when Hurricane Katrina surged through the area. Click here to learn more about Unity Homes.
2. HBN, Forbo Flooring, Milliken & Company, Shaw Industries and Arden Architectural Specialties will spotlight the importance of Green Chemistry to the next generation of thinking for green building materials at a press conference on Wednesday, November 15, 2 p.m. in room 707.
3. "Green Chemistry: The Next Plateau for Green Building Materials," Wednesday, November 15th, 3:30 – 5:00, HBN founder Bill Walsh will facilitate a break-out session featuring: Dr. Paul Anastas, Director of the Green Chemistry Institute; Dr. John Warner, director of the Center for Green Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts; and Professor Terry Collins, director of Carnegie Mellon University’s Institute for Green Oxidation Chemistry, Rooms 503/504.
