Solid Waste

Intent

Solid waste generated at all parts of the life cycle of building materials strains landfills, endangers habitats and wastes valuable materials that should be utilized. This category measures and rewards efforts to reduce and eliminate the generation of solid waste and the reclamation of all solid waste products that are generated in the life cycle of the product, including the product itself at the end of its useful life.

Ideal

There is no solid waste from extraction and processing of feedstocks, manufacturing of products, packaging, including for transportation, installation, and use of a product except that which is reused, recycled or composted. All of the product is reclaimed (meaning it is refurbished for reuse, recycled or composted) at the end of its useful life.
