Occupational Safety
IntentWorkers are often required to perform their jobs under circumstances or in conditions that pose a direct threat to their short- or long-term health, safety, and well being. Chemicals and materials that appear in safe levels in the final product often are present in the workplace at elevated concentrations that pose acute or chronic health threats to exposed workers. Workers also face physical danger through the operation of dangerous equipment, use of chemicals that pose a physical threat such as fire or explosion, or by working in an inherently unsafe environment such as working at elevation or underground. Companies have a responsibility to fully notify workers about such risks, to comply with and exceed any regulations protecting worker health, and to actively work to create and maintain a work environment that minimizes or eliminates risks to workers. This category evaluates and rewards products and materials manufactured by companies that provide for the safety, health and well being of workers in the occupational setting.
IdealThere is no component of the product that is manufactured in a manner or setting that poses an acute or chronic health affect to workers, or that poses a direct or indirect physical threat to human health through the unsafe use of equipment or chemicals in the occupational setting.
Key MetricsPresence in the occupational setting of flammable, corrosive, high pressure, or combustible, reactive, radioactive, or explosive materials; use of materials with a high flash point, proper usage and posting of MSDSs, adequate training programs, use of personal protective equipment, equipment maintenance programs, age and safety of equipment, OHSA violations. |
