Materials: Renewable
IntentContinued extraction and refinement of raw materials from the earth is unsustainable, as well as being energy intensive and having severe air and water quality and habitat destruction impacts. Standard forestry and agricultural practices also result in air and water quality and habitat destruction impacts as well as the unsustainable loss of soil. This category evaluates and rewards the use of reused and recycled materials and biobased materials that are harvested in an ecologically sustainable manner and are designed to be recycled back into similar product again at the end of their useful life.
IdealAll feedstocks used in the manufacture and use of the product are derived entirely from reused or recycled materials or ecologically sustainable, harvested biobased materials.
Key MetricsRecycled content, both post consumer and post industrial. Biobased content, Eco-label certification by best-in-class label (e.g. FSC certification) considering sustainable content.
