Fair Compensation

Intent

Fair compensation for labor rendered by workers is required to maintain the health and prosperity of an equitable and just society. Fair compensation is considered to be, at its most basic level, the income required to provide adequate food; clean water; safe, warm and dry shelter; clothing; and, recreation to an individual and their family in a given community. Health insurance, sick leave and pay for actual hours worked are additional forms of compensation that are reasonably expected by workers in industrialized societies in exchange for the labor and services they provide. However, many products and materials are manufactured using labor from undeveloped countries or by exploiting politically under-represented populations in developed countries for less than fair compensation by companies seeking to maximize profits. This category evaluates and rewards products and materials manufactured by companies that provide fair compensation for all workers across the life-cycle of the product.

Ideal

A product and its source materials are harvested, extracted, or manufactured exclusively by workers paid a fair compensation and benefits, whether as employees or otherwise, relative to the needs of the individual and the family within the local society.
