Energy: Embodied
IntentThe modern economy relies heavily on the use and availability of energy to produce products, provide transportation, provide for personal needs and fuel economic growth. However, per capita energy consumption has skyrocketed, resulting in increased levels of air contaminants, destruction of protected habitats and more frequent environmental disasters associated with the production, extraction, transport and combustion of fossil fuels. Even renewable energy sources have impacts and limits. This category evaluates and rewards products and product systems that minimize or eliminate the amount of energy, regardless of source embodied in the product or material throughout the life-cycle of the product.
IdealEnergy produced throughout the extraction and processing of raw materials, the manufacture and use of the product and the ultimate disposal of the product at end-of-life results in a net positive generation of energy onto the grid.
Key MetricsQuantity of energy consumed/produced during each life-cycle stage of the product or product system; energy conservation methods used.
