Manufacturing & Community Toxics (MfrTox)

Green chemistry to protect workers & communities

Basic Description |  Scoring Protocols |  Definitions |  Issues

Scoring Summary

This section addresses the health impact of chemicals used or emitted at any stage of the manufacturing of the product to which workers or neighboring communities could be exposed.

Scoring above a 1 in MfrTox requires that the manufacturer disclose 100% of the product's material contents. Pharos evaluates materials listed in the material content, as well as all chemicals used, generated or emitted in manufacture against chemical hazard warnings in the Chemical & Material Library (CML). Pharos awards higher scores to products that eliminate flagged chemicals of concern identified or use or emit them less frequently. Click here to see a table of the flagged levels of concern and frequency levels for chemicals and how they are scored.

Pharos will not score products that do not have full material content disclosure. Those products for which all contents are not disclosed receive a score of 1-incomplete data.

Pharos is currently developing systems for collecting emissions data from manufacturing facilities.  Currently, scoring for all products in this section is based upon chemicals of concern in the product content and used in its manufacture. Users will be notified when the data collection system is complete and scoring is adjusted to include manufacturing emissions.
