Air Quality
IntentFugitive emissions released to the air during the manufacture or use of a product can degrade air quality posing a threat to human health and the environment. Release of criteria pollutants such as ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and lead can result in respiratory illness such as asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema in local populations, or more extreme illness such as lung damage, heart disease, or damage to the central nervous system. Release of other criteria pollutants such as ozone, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides compounds harm plants, destroy water quality and damage crops. This category evaluates and rewards products and product systems that minimize or eliminate fugitive or uncontrolled releases of criteria air pollutants to the air throughout the life-cycle of the product.
IdealThere are no fugitive or airborne emissions of criteria air pollutants at any time over the life-cycle of the product or product system.
Key MetricsFugitive airborne releases of lead, Ozone, PM2.5, NOx, SO2, CO.
