Project Summary

The Pharos was the great lighthouse of Alexandria.  This wonder of the ancient world inspires the Pharos Project.

The name Pharos has been given to the project for symbolic reasons. Pharos was a technological wonder of its age, the ingenuity of its lens construction inspiring contemporaries with the distance of its signal. Similarly, our Pharos will signal our ideals while providing reliable navigational aids even now while society remains lost at sea on materials policy.

The Pharos Project is offered as a navigational aid to those searching for building materials that are good for people and the planet. Pharos signals an ideal endpoint which stays constant even as we adjust our own positions to our progress, or adapt to changes in the technology we use, or the conditions we face. Pharos is designed to encourage multiple routes and accommodate varied perspectives on how to reach our shared ideal.

And with the advent of digital technology, the Pharos Project does something that the Pharos of Alexandria could not do: using the latest in Open Source technology, share this information widely, accurately, and fairly.
